Rob Reiner, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “When Harry Met Sally…” and “Stand by Me,” was found dead alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home. The discovery was made on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and quickly sent shockwaves through Hollywood and their quiet neighborhood.
Authorities later confirmed that both Rob and Michele suffered fatal injuries, describing wounds consistent with a knife. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, made the devastating discovery, triggering an immediate response from law enforcement and emergency crews.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division launched a full investigation. Officials have not named a suspect, but confirmed the deaths are being treated as a homicide case, with detectives continuing to work behind closed doors.
Rob was 78 and Michele was 68. They had been married for more than three decades and raised three children together, Jake, Romy, and Nick Reiner, building a life largely kept private despite Rob’s public career.
Rob also shared a daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to the late director Penny Marshall. Friends described the family as close, with strong ties to both Hollywood and their Brentwood community.
Rob Reiner was a second-generation Hollywood figure, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner. He first gained national fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family,” earning two Primetime Emmy Awards for the role.
By the early 1980s, Rob shifted into directing, beginning with “This Is Spinal Tap.” What followed was a remarkable run of films including “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” and “When Harry Met Sally…”
Rob met Michele while working on “When Harry Met Sally…,” where she was a photographer. Their bond formed quickly, and the two married in 1989, remaining together for more than 35 years.
As the investigation unfolded, dispatch audio from the day the bodies were found was released. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a firefighter at the scene placed a tense call requesting additional backup.
The audio offered no details about what was inside the home, but the urgency in the responder’s voice stood out. The brief clip only deepened public unease surrounding the circumstances of the deaths.
Later that evening, Billy Crystal and Larry David were seen arriving separately at the Reiner residence. Their visits were brief and private, with one neighbor saying Billy “looked like he was about to cry.”
Attention has since turned to the Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner. Authorities have not confirmed a suspect, but stated that someone connected to the case is being questioned as the investigation continues.
