Howard Howes’ love for his late wife Janet inspired an incredible act of devotion. After losing Janet unexpectedly 28 years ago, Howard began planting thousands of oak trees on their farm in Gloucestershire, England, crafting a heart-shaped meadow visible only from above.
Howard and Janet married in 1962 and lived on a 112-acre farm near Wickwar. After over three decades together, Janet passed away suddenly from heart failure at 50.
Heartbroken, Howard wanted to create something lasting. He planted saplings around a clearing shaped like a heart pointing toward Wotton Hill, Janet’s childhood home, ensuring her memory remained connected to a place she loved.
The planting involved arranging trees and hedges to maintain the heart’s shape over time. The forest has since become a habitat for wildlife, with bright daffodils blooming annually within the heart.
Howard visits often, sitting on a bench overlooking the meadow, finding comfort in the peaceful tribute. The project remained private until a hot air balloonist spotted the heart from the sky and shared photos.
The story spread worldwide, showing how love can manifest through nature and inspire others.
Howard keeps caring for the forest and occasionally flies over it to see the full scope of his loving creation.
His tribute symbolizes grief transformed into beauty, a reminder that love’s legacy can endure lifetimes.
