Alligator Alcatraz Detainees Allege Inhumane Conditions: ‘Like Rats in an Experiment

Conditions inside Alligator Alcatraz, the makeshift migrant detention center in Florida’s Everglades, are inhumane, detainees and their family members say.

Since the facility opened earlier this month, multiple outlets have reported on harsh conditions faced by detainees, including spoiled food, mosquitoes and other bugs in cells, lights that stay on for 24 hours, denial of religious rights, and limited access to showers and working toilets.

A migrant detained at the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” facility has gone viral after revealing shocking conditions from inside the tent camp in the Everglades.

“There’s no water to bathe… I haven’t showered in four days,” the inmate told a reporter. He claims 400 people are packed into the site, where lights stay on 24/7 and the food — served just once a day — “has worms.”
Though the average temperature outside is 89°F, he says the tents are “freezing,” and the mosquitoes are “the size of elephants.” His partner says he’s a permanent U.S. resident, arrested last week.
