A young couple thought their lives had just changed forever when they saw the app show they had the winning EuroMillions numbers. Rachel Kennedy, 19, and her boyfriend Liam McCrohan, 21, believed they had landed the £182 million which was around $216 million.
Rachel said: “I went on the app and it said ‘Winning Match’ and I thought ‘Oh my God, I’ve won.’” She explained how she called her boyfriend and her mom into the room to see it and they were stunned too.
The couple admitted they quickly started dreaming about how they would spend the money. They had played the same set of numbers for weeks in a row and thought their patience had finally paid off.
But there was a problem that crushed it all. Rachel was a university student at the time and she didn’t have enough funds in her account to actually buy the ticket that week.
She said: “I called the number thinking that I had won £182 million and they said ‘Yeah you’ve got the right numbers but you didn’t have the funds in your account for the payment of the ticket.’”
She admitted she was disappointed but Liam took it even harder. Rachel said he was more upset than her, and he admitted: “She was quite relaxed about it, but I had kind of spent it in my head already. I was absolutely heartbroken when we heard the man on the phone say we hadn’t actually bought the ticket.”
The National Lottery later responded to the story. A spokesperson said: “We’re aware of Rachel’s story, and hope she gets in early to buy a ticket for the next big draw.” They added that they wish her the best of luck in future draws.
