A Britain’s Got Talent star has died after what his family called a very brief illness. His son said that he passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning, surrounded by loved ones. The cause was sepsis, which developed just a week before his death.
His son shared the heartbreaking news in a statement, saying: “For those that knew him, he lit up a room wherever he went and everyone instantly fell in love with him.”
Fans of the show quickly flooded the comments online, sending condolences and sharing their memories of his performances.
Dave Betton, 82, was best known for his appearance on the 2020 season of the talent show. He performed alongside his son Dean, and together they earned a standing ovation for their version of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life.”
During the audition, Amanda Holden said the duo had “smashed” it, while Simon Cowell told them: “There are certain days I think what I need is a mug of hot chocolate – and you were a mug of hot chocolate! You made me feel good, I needed that.”
The father and son made it to the later stages of the competition after winning the public vote. Their act became a favorite for many viewers who loved seeing their chemistry and joy on stage.
Dean announced his father’s passing in an emotional message online. He wrote: “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I have to let you all know that the legend that is Dave Betton sadly passed away after a very brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones.”
He went on to say: “Myself, my brother Darren, our wives, his grandsons and granddaughters, great grandsons and great granddaughters, extended family and all his friends will miss him dearly and he will leave us with a huge void to fill.”
He added: “Rest easy Pops and I hope Mum is giving you a big telling off for joining her far too soon. Love you always. From me and your loving Family.”
Before appearing on the show, Dave had been a well-known club singer who performed around the world, including tours in Australia and South Africa. After his wife’s death, his son Dean followed in his footsteps and became a Robbie Williams tribute act, continuing the family’s connection to music.
Dave’s funeral will take place on October 27. His family described his passing as sudden and deeply painful. Sepsis, the illness that took his life, is a serious condition that can cause fever, shivering, confusion, reduced urination, and a blotchy rash.
