Plus-Sized Influencer Shuts Down Critics Who Say She Should Pay More For Seats

Jaelynn Chaney, who comes from the Tri-Cities area in Washington, often shares content online about “fighting for fat liberation”. She has also gone so far as to call for plus-sized travelers to be given additional seats free of charge when flying.

Now, at 28 years old, Jaelynn is speaking up once again. She has taken to TikTok to directly respond to harsh criticism, including people telling her to “lose weight” or suggesting she should just ‘upgrade to first class’ to deal with her size.

Some people have even compared her situation to baggage fees, saying that if they have to pay for overweight luggage, Jaelynn should also have to pay more for her seat on a plane.

But Jaelynn clearly felt hurt by those comments and fired back, saying: “So now my body is being compared to luggage? Charging by weight is fat phobic and dehumanising. I’m not a suitcase.”

She followed up by adding: “Paying extra for luggage is a different issue entirely. Let’s talk about fair, equal treatment for all passengers.”

Jaelynn, who is reported to be a size 6XL (UK size 24), also pushed back at people who told her to go on a diet. She emphasized that it is “not her job” to shrink herself just to make other passengers feel more comfortable.

In one of her responses, she said: “Oh so I should just change my entire body to accommodate your comfort? It’s not my job to shrink myself to fit into spaces that were never designed for me in the first place.”

She also pointed out: “And let’s not even get into the fact that losing weight isn’t a simple fix, it’s not a one-size fits all solution.”

Some critics have suggested she should simply pay more to fly first class. But Jaelynn argues that the conversation should be about “fixing the system, not the people.” rather than just upgrading seats.

Jaelynn added further, saying: “First class is a luxury and guess what? First class isn’t big enough for some fat bodies.”

She also explained: “The cost is way out of reach for most people and upgrading doesn’t solve the fundamental issue of under-sized seats for fat people in economy. Fix the system, not the people.”

Some commenters even told Jaelynn that if airplane seats don’t fit her properly, she should just avoid flying altogether.

However, the influencer pushed back, stating that flying is a “necessity” and excluding people because of their body size is unfair.

In her words, “I’ll just stop living my life because the world isn’t built for me? Flying is a necessity for many people, whether for work, family or travel,”

She went on to say: “Telling fat people to just stay at home is not a solution – it’s exclusion.”

“Sure, flying is a privilege, but basic human dignity and accessibility are rights.”

“No one should be excluded from travelling comfortably or safely because of their body size. Let’s focus on equality, not exclusion.”

Jaelynn is now urging the US government to adopt a “fat equality bill of rights and the fat accessibility act.” to create real change.

She continued her message by saying: “It’s time to stop tolerating fat phobia and make travel, healthcare and public spaces accessible to everyone, no matter the size,”

To help fund her advocacy efforts, Jaelynn even launched a Go Fund Me page where supporters can donate towards securing “equal rights, dignity and basic accessibility for fat people.”.

In a passionate closing, she added: “We deserve to travel, live and exist without the shame or extra costs. Join me in the fight for a better future. Let’s de-mantle fat phobia together.”

Her TikTok video gathered hundreds of comments, with people offering a range of opinions about her campaign.

One critic wrote: “Consequently it isn’t the world’s responsibility to accommodate your poor health choices.”

Another person commented: “No it’s to accommodate YOUR comfort.”

A third chimed in: “Well the airline is gonna charge you if you take up space that could have been used for another paying customer.”

Someone else added: “Take responsibility for yourself. The world doesn’t revolve around accommodating your needs.”

Still, not everyone disagreed. One person supported Jaelynn by saying: “I’m a 6ft Size 18 female…. I have to squeeze LENGTH AND WIDTH! Your posts are soo valid!!”

Another supporter wrote: “Don’t listen to the haters, you don’t need to change”

And someone else commented: “You’re very inspiring I’m a plus size person I’m very self conscious and trying to lose weight but it’s hard cuz of my medical condition and mental health.”
