Tragic Loss of College Student to Allergic Reaction

The community in Wisconsin is still reeling from the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Hannah Glass, a freshman at Maranatha Baptist University who died from an unexpected allergic reaction to a brownie. Hannah had a known peanut allergy and was usually cautious, but the sweet treat she received from a friend contained roasted peanut flour, which triggered a violent reaction.

After taking two bites of the brownie, Hannah’s condition rapidly deteriorated. She threw up, broke out in hives, and experienced severe anaphylaxis, which caused her lung to collapse. Despite the administration of an EpiPen and paramedics’ efforts to revive her, Hannah’s brain suffered critical damage due to lack of oxygen. She was placed on a ventilator, but the damage was irreversible.

The medical team fought to save her life, but ultimately, Hannah’s brain was terminally damaged. Her organs were donated, saving four lives, and she was honored with a traditional “Honor Walk” before being taken to the operating room for donation. Over 300 people attended the tribute, showing their love and respect for the young woman.

Hannah’s parents, David and Janean Glass, are now sharing her story to raise awareness about food allergies. They emphasize the importance of being aware of potential allergens and having EpiPens up to date. David Glass says, “Always be aware. Make sure your EpiPens are up to date.” The family has brought Hannah’s cremated remains home, finding comfort in having a physical reminder of their daughter.

Hannah’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of food allergy awareness. Her memory lives on through the lives she saved and in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
