A birthday celebration turned into tragedy for a Georgia family when nine-year-old Emily Grace Mayo was found dead on May 27, 2025. Instead of attending her grandfather’s birthday, Emily was discovered in a car at Brooklet City Park with a gunshot wound. Her father, 37-year-old James Lee Mayo, was also found dead in the front seat from a self-inflicted wound, with a handgun on his lap.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Brooklet Police Department are investigating the heartbreaking case. Emily’s death has shaken her family and community. Her aunt, Amber Healy, launched a GoFundMe that quickly surpassed \$29,000. Amber described Emily as a joyful, loving child who adored singing, dancing, animals, and her friends. “The world lost a huge light,” she wrote.
Emily was a fourth-grade student at Brooklet Elementary, known for her kindness, humor, and vibrant spirit. She had earned academic honors and was awarded the “Future Influencer” Award for her positivity.
In emotional posts, Amber condemned James Mayo, stating he “didn’t deserve her” and that the family does not mourn him. Emily’s music teacher, Tasheina Canty-White, shared memories of Emily’s laughter and energy, recalling her recent performance of “Party in the USA.”
Emily leaves behind her mother, younger sister, grandparents, extended family, and friends. Funeral arrangements are underway, and a community vigil is planned.
