Man d.ies after being licked by his dog

A tragic case of rabies has been reported in Dong Nai, Vietnam, after a 54-year-old man died following exposure to the virus through an open wound. Mr. N.K.H., a resident of Thach Man hamlet in Tan Loi commune, was licked by a dog suspected of having rabies but did not seek medical treatment or receive a rabies vaccination.

According to an epidemiological investigation, the dog involved became unusually aggressive on June 16, attacking and killing two other dogs. In response, Mr. H. beat the dog to death but still did not pursue post-exposure rabies prophylaxis or receive anti-rabies serum.

Nearly a month later, on July 10, Mr. H. began to show classic rabies symptoms—hydrophobia (fear of water), photophobia (sensitivity to light), aversion to noise, and loss of appetite. He was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with rabies. Despite medical efforts and close monitoring, he passed away at home seven days later.

Test results from the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases confirmed that Mr. H. had tested positive for the rabies virus.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the deadly nature of rabies and the importance of immediate medical care following any potential exposure. Health authorities urge the public to seek vaccination and medical advice promptly after being bitten, scratched, or even licked on broken skin by animals suspected of carrying rabies.
