Passenger ‘sliced open’ after waterslide on world’s biggest cruise ship shatters

A passenger on Royal Caribbean’s *Icon of the Seas*, the world’s largest cruise ship, was injured after a waterslide shattered mid-ride. The incident happened on August 7, just days before the ship was due to return to Miami.

Footage showed water gushing from the damaged slide as passengers shouted, *“Stop the slide. Stop the slide.”* A jagged hole was later seen in the 46ft Frightening Bolt Waterslide, known for its trapdoor launch and 360° loop. Despite some onlookers claiming someone “fell out,” Royal Caribbean confirmed no one went through the hole. Instead, the male rider suffered “skin laceration injuries from his legs to his hands.” He is now in stable condition.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said, *“Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through.”* The slide and surrounding deck area were closed pending investigation.

The *Icon of the Seas* launched last year with space for 7,600 guests, a crew of 2,350, and the largest waterpark at sea, featuring six record-breaking slides.

This comes after recent incidents on the same ship, including a passenger falling from an infinity pool and a crew member jumping overboard.
