Scarred for life after an acid attack but still loved by her husband – Katie Piper says marriage is “hard but worth it” after 10 years

After almost a decade of marriage, Katie Piper has confessed that staying in a long-term relationship hasn’t been as easy as it may appear. Speaking candidly about her marriage to Richard Sutton, the Loose Women star told the Mirror: “It’s hard but worth it. I have to be honest because I don’t like to make other people feel bad. Marriage is actually really hard – when you’re young, you’re told it’s all romance, but in reality, it’s partnership, compromise, and not being big-headed.”

Katie explained that for her, marriage is about wanting to “do life” with someone, putting lives together because it’s “better, easier and more enjoyable” that way. She admitted that while it hasn’t been easy, she’s always found it worthwhile.

The couple, who met in 2013, share two daughters – Belle and Penelope – and have been focusing on family life. Katie revealed she avoids rushing bedtime with the children by putting her phone on flight mode for two hours to eliminate distractions. “You can lose your temper at bedtime and say things you regret. I want to be present. We eat dinner at 4.30pm at home, so when I’m away for work and people want to eat at 8pm, I’m ready for bed!”

Beyond her family life, Katie reflected on her TV career and her work as an activist following the horrific acid attack she survived in 2008. Becoming a Loose Women panellist was a proud moment for her. “I like that you’re allowed to be your authentic self on the show. It’s a good platform to share your views.”

She also spoke about her daughters’ interests, saying they’re a mix of both parents – with one showing a natural talent for singing. Katie encourages them to explore their passions without pressure, and they’ve already been involved in her charity work, meeting many burn survivors.

Katie is currently collaborating with vitamin brand Haliborange on their YoungerMinds campaign, which supports children’s emotional wellbeing. She believes it’s a positive step, helping with her kids’ sleep, exam stress, and hormonal changes.
