That was sadly the case for one dog who went through an awful attack. His face was badly burned, but even after such trauma, he’s managed to come a long way — all thanks to a dedicated team of veterinarians.
In April 2021, Tunica Humane Society shared the heartbreaking story of Buddy, a dog described as a “happy and carefree dog” who was “never a threat to anyone,”. He had been set on fire and was found in a horrific state, his face badly scorched and blackened. To make it worse, there was an extension cord tied tightly around his neck.

Buddy was placed in the care of Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi, where he began receiving treatment through the Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Slowly but surely, Buddy started his journey toward recovery.
“Buddy’s vital signs are good but, as with any burn patient, this is very much the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, associate professor and veterinary surgeon, in an interview with WTVA.
Despite how severe his injuries looked, there was a silver lining — Buddy’s vision appeared to be intact. The team at Tunica Humane Society said that his eyes had not been permanently damaged. While his eyelids still needed surgery, they believed he would be able to see once healed.
At that time, Buddy still had bandages wrapped around most of his upper body. But through it all, he stayed remarkably strong and upbeat.
“During his bandage change today, he showed remarkable improvement in the appearance of his face. While Buddy continues to heal, he is learning some basic commands.”
“This sweet, friendly dog didn’t deserve what happened to him,” they added. “He wasn’t a threat to anyone. It was extremely cruel and calculated.”
Since Buddy’s story first touched hearts around the world, he has continued to recover with incredible care from the veterinary team at Mississippi State.
He went through skin graft surgeries to treat his burns, and over time, needed fewer bandages. Little by little, his old spark started coming back.
Then, on August 7, they announced a major milestone in Buddy’s healing journey — a “huge turning point”.
For the first time since the incident, Buddy’s bandages covering his eyes were removed without heavy sedation. It marked a powerful moment — after more than three months, Buddy could finally see again.
“Buddy’s last real memory of vision was in the final horrific moments just before his face was set on fire by a child. In the blink of an eye, this dog’s whole life changed.”
Regaining his sight was a huge step forward for Buddy, both physically and emotionally. Those caring for him said that he began showing signs of his true self again — the sweet dog he used to be.

“He is happy and playful and walking the halls of the hospital with a great big ball in his mouth. He loves balls. He carries them around so everyone can see.”
The group also posted a heartwarming video showing Buddy playing fetch, showing just how far he’s come.
Due to the trauma he endured, Buddy will also have some long-term care needs that his future caregivers will need to keep in mind.
“His skin is going to be sensitive, his eyes will probably require eye drops, he’ll have to wear sunscreen when he’s outside,” Williams explained. “He is not going to be a dog that can stay out in the sun hours at a time.”
Be sure to share Buddy’s story with others. His journey shows how love, care, and second chances can change everything.
