A female tradeswoman has stirred a big conversation online by calling out the double standards at her workplace. She questioned why male workers can work shirtless on hot days while she cannot, calling it sexist and unfair.

A female landscaper from Sydney, Australia, has gone viral for pointing out what she calls clear “double standards” in the workplace.

She challenged the idea that men can remove their shirts on hot days, but women like her aren’t allowed to do the same.

Her name is Shianne Fox, and she’s gained attention online using her social media handle, “The Bikini Tradie.”

Shianne took to social media to vent about how unfair this situation felt to her. In her post, she explained how she had asked her boss if she could remove her shirt while working, just like her male colleagues do when it’s hot.

Shianne, who often works wearing a bikini, said this happened during a scorching 40-degree Celsius day when staying cool was a real challenge.

In her TikTok video, Shianne explained, “It’s a f—ing 40-degree day today and I’m the one who has to wear my shirt [while] all the boys on the site don’t have to wear theirs.”

She followed that by adding, “It’s a double standard, it’s s-xist, and I’m actually really over it. I just want to be topless like the boys but no, I will ‘distract them’,”

During an interview with news.com.au, Shianne explained more about her views. She said, “It was such a hot day. Obviously, when you work in the industry, lots of the boys have their tops off. I thought it was only fair if I could get mine off, too. I have no shame in getting my b–bs out.”

She continued by saying, “I don’t think it should be ‘distracting’ because at the end of the day they’re just a natural thing. If you’re going to be childish and feel like they’re going to be distracting, then you should just grow up,”

Shianne has years of experience working in male-dominated industries

Shianne, who also creates content for an adult platform, shared that she wanted to speak up because there aren’t many women working in trades.

She explained, “I’ve been working in male-dominated jobs for the last four or so years. I thought if I put myself out there, maybe other women will want to join the trades industry.”

Despite what some people might assume, she says she enjoys her work and added, “A lot of people say you get catcalled, but it’s nothing like that at all,”

She also mentioned, “From my experience, if you just go in there with your head held high and if you don’t let men have it over you. Stand your ground. They won’t do anything,”

Social media users shared mixed reactions to her video

Shianne’s post sparked plenty of mixed reactions online. Some people agreed with her, saying women should be able to work however they want.

Others felt uncomfortable with the idea of her working topless. On top of that, the video attracted some inappropriate comments, but Shianne made it clear that she is not letting negativity get to her.

She shared that if she took every comment to heart, she would probably feel like “the most unhappiest person in the world”.

Several men chimed in to support her message. One wrote, “yep totally agree spread the t-ts and f–k the boys.”.

Others left comments like, “I don’t think anyone would complain, miss,”, “I fully agree with you,”, and “I’m not offended.”.

However, not everyone was on board. One user disagreed, saying, “Surely there’s an aircon in the kitchen.”

Other women in trades criticized Foxx’s approach

Foxx’s videos also sparked frustration among some female tradesworkers.

They expressed concern that her videos were giving the wrong impression about women in their industry.

Some women felt that her approach did not represent how they wanted their trade community to be seen.

Women remain underrepresented in blue-collar jobs

Female tradesworkers continue to be a minority in blue-collar roles. In fact, women are underrepresented by about 80% in these fields. A 2023 Deloitte survey shed light on this, showing that there are roughly 12 men for every woman in trades and similar jobs.

These numbers highlight the challenges women face and the growing conversation around making trades more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
