12-year-old girl dies of rare cancer—parents noticed worrying sign as she brushed teeth

One night while 12-year-old Beth Phelps was brushing her teeth, her parents noticed a lump on her shoulder visible through her T-shirt. Until that moment, Beth had been a healthy, active child.

A doctor’s visit revealed a 7cm lesion on her left lung, diagnosed as Ewing sarcoma—a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. Beth immediately began treatment, including surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. After a grueling fight, she was declared cancer-free.

Sadly, in June 2022, Beth began feeling pain in her right shoulder. Tests confirmed the cancer had returned in her other lung, and this time, the prognosis was much worse.

Beth passed away on October 3, 2022. Her parents were offered a new therapeutic study but chose palliative care to ensure her remaining time was as comfortable as possible.

Beth’s father, Ben Phelps, recalled the devastating moment: “She had no symptoms that stood out. Beth was a healthy little girl.” Despite being terrified of needles, she faced every treatment bravely.

“We’d never heard of Ewing sarcoma before,” Ben said. “We miss Beth every day, and we are determined to make a difference in her name.”

To honor her memory and raise awareness, Ben has taken on a massive challenge—cycling from Land’s End in Cornwall to John O’Groats in Scotland. The ride supports the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT), aiming to fund kinder treatments and improve survival rates.

Beth remains her family’s inspiration, a guiding light behind their mission to help others.
