The Whiskey Experiment

Every night before bed, a man had exactly the same routine.

He brushed his teeth, checked that the doors were locked, poured himself a shot of whiskey and drank it before going to sleep.

He had been doing this for years.

His wife had tried everything to make him quit.

She had given him lectures.

She had hidden the bottle.

She had even replaced his favorite whiskey glass with one that said, “Think About Your Liver.”

Nothing worked.

Finally, she decided that instead of arguing, she would use science.

One evening, she placed two shot glasses on the kitchen table.

She filled one with water and the other with whiskey.

Then she brought over her husband’s bait box and called him into the room.

“I want you to see this.”

The husband sighed and sat down, already suspicious.

His wife took a live worm and dropped it into the glass of water.

The worm happily wriggled around.

“See?” she said.

Then she took another worm and dropped it into the whiskey.

Within moments, the worm stopped moving.

His wife crossed her arms triumphantly.

Surely this demonstration was impossible to misunderstand.

She looked at her husband and asked,

“What do you have to say about this experiment?”

The man studied both glasses carefully.

He looked at the dead worm.

Then at the whiskey.

Finally, his face brightened as though he had just learned some excellent news.

He responded by saying,

“If I drink whiskey, I won’t get worms!”
